I am so excited about getting involved with the Step-One program.  After winning the title of "Tennessee Junior Miss" in July, I really wanted to go into the schools and encourage kids to exercise and eat right.  Junior Misses from all over the United States promote the platform of "Be Your Best Self" which has 7 points:

1. Setting goals
2. Working to achieve them
3. Serving your community
4. Proper nutrition
5. Staying fit
6. Living by moral principles
7. Getting a good education

Right now, I believe one of the most important messages that kids need to hear is to eat right and stay fit. Obesity is a real problem, and I want to encourage children, as well as their community, to strive to live a healthy lifestyle each day.  "Step-One" has been a God-send with their amazing staff and vision for the future.  I now have an even greater opportunity to go into schools, which have begun to spread the message of a healthy lifestyle through the Step-One program, and encourage the children to do the right things. I am motivated when I hear of all the disease and health-care costs that could be eliminated if we get the message of Step-One implemented in the community.  I can not wait to see what the future holds for Step-One! Keep it up......

I was thrilled to be asked to sing the National Anthem at the Hamilton County Fair as Tennessee Junior Miss, but I was equally thrilled to have the opportunity to volunteer at the Hamilton County Step-One booth.  The weather wasn’t the best Saturday, but it held off long enough to allow people to enjoy the fair!  I was excited about singing the national anthem for the first time for a large crowd, and I feel it went well… or so my mom says, but after that I was able to meet and sign autographs for people at the Step-One tent.  I met some really interesting people in the four hours I was there, and I let them know a little bit more about Step-One and its role in our community.  Talking about heath and nutrition was a lot of fun, but I especially liked giving a way apples and bananas!  If you came by, I hope you got an apple, banana, PowerAde, goodie bag, and a better understanding of Step-One.  Too bad the weather didn't hold up for Sunday, but maybe next year we can get out and make even more of an impact.

Yesterday, I was out at Daisy Elementary for Trunk-or-Treat.  With my car all decorated, kids came by to shoot a basketball and get candy.  I enjoyed meeting and signing autographs for all the kids and letting them know who I was and how I encourage kids to stay fit.  It is hard to stay away from the sugar and eat healthy during Halloween, but you can have self control and try not to eat it all yourself.  I told the children it was a good idea to share their candy with others at lunch or at home and not to eat too much by themselves.  I plan to go back to Daisy and bring Step-One with me to share with these kids the importance of fruits and veggies in their life and the vast variety to choose from!
