NRCC Partners with Step ONE
The North River Community Coalition, funded by Memorial Hospital's Catholic Health Initiative, in cooperation with the Hamilton County Department of Education, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and Step ONE will be conducting a pilot program in seven elementary schools in north Hamilton County . The program will focus on three areas to help improve the health of children.
Water education, nutritional education, and the Walking Works program from BCBS will be the areas of concentration. Materials will be sent home with students to improve the knowledge of the family as well as the student.
Fruit Fridays will be a component of the nutritional education piece. Each month a new fruit will be introduced to the students for their sampling and then that fruit will be available on the lunch line.
The Walking Works program will encourage teachers to take their classes outside for short walks. The teachers will wear pedometers to measure steps taken and the class will follow their progress.
The objective of the NRCC is to help children adopt habits and behaviors that will have long lasting and positive effects on their health. Our hope is this program will ultimately have positive health effects on the entire family unit as well.
