Eat Smart/Healthy Starts Initiative Overview

Funded Agency: Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department

Funding from the Junior League: $50,000 each year for 3 years

Program Summary: The Junior League of Chattanooga’s partnership with the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department on the JLC/Step ONE Eat Smart program addresses obesity among children age 6 to 11 years with a three-fold focus on homes (families), schools and dining establishments. The Junior League, through Eat Smart, will focus on choices made in the home by providing nutrition education, activities and materials to families, neighborhood organizations, faith-based institutions, food stores, and media outlets. The Junior League, through Eat Smart, will focus on choices students make in our elementary schools by expanding throughout the county a elements of a pilot nutrition education program, which promotes the consumption of fruits and vegetables by students. The Junior League, through Eat Smart, will focus on restaurant menu options by helping to create demand for healthier menu selections and by providing real benefits to restaurants that share that concern for the health of the community.

Community Impact: In Hamilton County, 12% of children in grades 9-12 are obese. In 2005, 14.6 students in Tennessee (K-12) were overweight. Such conditions contribute to the growing health crisis of high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes among children. In the Hamilton County Youth Behavior Risk Surveillance Survey, barely 15% of adolescent respondents reported eating 5 servings of fruits or vegetables a day. The JLC/Step ONE Eat Smart program will reach Hamilton County children and parents, helping families start upon a path toward a healthy future.

Mayor Claude Ramsey says, “Fifty thousand volunteer hours by Junior League of Chattanooga members will go a long way toward changing the health culture of our community, encouraging and educating more people to Eat Smart.”
